Having a bedbug infestation in your property is a distressing experience. It is unlikely that you will ever see one of these insects.

The thing you will see and feel are their bites. Skin irritation from a bedbug bite are often in clusters of 3 bites which tend to be found on the upper body, they can appear like a stinging nettle rash as opposed to an attack from an insect. Some people’s skin can be very sensitive to bedbug bites and can have unbearable rashes, whereas others can be largely unaffected.

iQ Pest Control are often asked how bedbugs do so much damage but remain unseen?

How can I tell if I have bedbugs?

If you are getting bitten in your home the chances are it’s not bedbugs. Dependant on the time of year there are many species of insects that can fly into our home through the windows especially in the warmer months. Mosquitoes and midges are common pests that bite.

The tell-tale clusters of bites on the upper body are what is usually noticed, other evidence of a bedbug infestation are small pin prick sized black spots of faecal matter (this is known as “spotting”). When you know what you are looking for you may find trails to and from their hiding places. Bedbugs often huddle together in their expertly chosen hiding places. Our pest experts in some extreme circumstances can actually smell a bedbug infestation.

Have you spotted a bedbug? Adult bedbugs are a reddish brown insect similar in size to an apple pip, around 4-5mm in length. Their hatchlings are no bigger than a poppy seed but are pale white in colour. The eggs are pinhead sized and also are white which makes spotting them very difficult to the naked eye.

What the hell are bedbugs?

Bedbugs are nocturnal, but have also adapted to feed on you when you are sleeping. Bedbugs are attracted to carbon dioxide which we all release during uninterrupted sleep. Once the bedbugs have detected that the level of carbon dioxide has reached their optimum feeding environment they will wake up and follow the CO², this is why bedbug bites are often found on the upper body tending to be on or around the head, neck, shoulders, back and upper arms.

Once bedbugs have fed on you they will withdraw back to their hideaway. As their bodies are flat they can squeeze into narrow crevices such as gaps in bed frames or in the seams of mattresses. Bedbugs have perfectly evolved to allow themselves to feed on their victims night after night without being seen or squashed, a flea infestation is usually quite the opposite as they are easily observed

What should I do if I’m infested?

Unless you want to dispose of all your furniture and move house there is NO effective DIY solution for a bedbug infestation. Professional extermination of bedbugs is your only real option.

If you have found where these blood sucking insects are hiding try not to disturb them as this will often make the infestation worse. You may want to seek vengeance but once disturbed bedbugs will often spread throughout your house to find new places to hide which will make the job of your professional exterminator even more difficult.

Professional Bedbug Extermination

If you have a severe bedbug infestation and you want to achieve total bedbug extermination you have to understand that it will require multiple visits from a trained pest controller. I would be extremely cautious if the initial advice you get on the phone from another pest control company claims it can be done in one visit.

To completely eradicate serious bedbug infestations it is vital that you have minimum of 3 visits spread over a few weeks, this is so our treatment can deal with bedbugs at every stage of their life cycle. One visit may deal with the live bedbugs but the remaining eggs will hatch and the infestation will continue, the one visit approach will prolong the discomfort of the painful and irritating bedbug bites.

iQ Pest Control start with a comprehensive site survey, we first need to find the exact source of the infestation and then systematically strike every hiding place of the bedbugs. The method we use to deal with the bedbug will vary depending on the level of infestation and the nature of the site in hand.

Treatment includes direct application of pesticides to cracks and crevices, fumigation, residual pesticides and mobile heat treatment. Please note we provide FREE SITE INSPECTIONS 01280 811198 to all hotels, bed and breakfasts, guest houses in our surrounding areas.

Bedbug Numbers and Infestations are increasing

Bedbugs can be transferred unwittingly by anyone who has the misfortune of coming in contact with them. For example they can hitch a ride on a suitcase taken into a hotel in the UK or abroad and then come back home with you…… or even vice versa. They can also hide in soft furnishings, upholstery, the obvious mattresses and bed frames. So every time you buy any second hand furniture (or maybe even new) you have a chance of inviting these blood sucking pests into your home.

By no fault of your own bedbugs can infest your property, they will quickly make your bed their home and feed on you and your loved ones whilst you sleep. To wipe bedbugs out for good call iQ Pest Control 01280 811198 to book your appointment with our expert bedbug extermination team.

How do you exterminate bedbugs?

  1. iQ will locate the source of the infestation. Usually in the bedroom in bedframes, mattresses or in crevices and cracks around your bed. If you do find bedbugs do not disturb them as they will spread throughout your home.

  2. We spray bedbug nesting sites with a professional use residual insecticide, the next step is fumigation of the property. If furniture is found to be seriously infested then it may need to be destroyed.

  3. iQ will visit at least 3 times, the visits will be spaced approximately a week apart. This is essential so we can exterminate bed bugs in all stages of their lifecycle.

  4. Preventing bedbug infestations? When returning from holidays or weekends away all clothes should be washed on a hot wash. Avoid purchasing second hand furniture.
