A bit of history regarding grey squirrel introduction. Grey squirrels were intentionally released in the UK from North America in 1876. Since the introduction of the much larger grey squirrel they have decimated our native red squirrel population, this is due to a couple factors one of them being most grey squirrels carry squirrelpox (which only affects our native red squirrel) and the other fact is that the grey is much more aggressive and will kill the much smaller younger red squirrels.
Other than a few very small isolated populations in Wales, Mid and Southern England you will not see red squirrels, sadly there are none in the area that iQ Pest Control patrol. The only places currently left where red squirrels are fairly commonly seen are in the far North of England in Cumbria and Northumberland and then North of the Border in Scotland.

Do squirrels need to be controlled?
Seeing grey squirrels in parks or in wooded areas leaping from branch to branch, or observing them in the autumn busily collecting nuts for the winter is a pleasant thing to see. If however squirrels take to living inside your home or business it will be a stressful chaotic experience!
Squirrels when found in the home are most likely to have gained access to your loft, attic or crawl spaces. Squirrels make nests (which are also known as a squirrel drey) for them and their babies, they invariably choose to use which for them is the most perfect material found in almost all UK homes – fibreglass insulation! They are often heard scratching and gnawing whilst they move around your property. Female squirrels can have 2 litters per year, having as many as 6 babies at a time. These babies are able to breed themselves at the tender age of 8 months and may also return to the same site as where they were born and raised if they can still gain access.
Do you need to clear squirrels out of your loft?
If left unchecked and you do not get rid of squirrels hiding in your loft they are likely to cause a mass amount of damage, squirrels are known to cause a significant number of fires every year in the UK. Which is why it is crucially important to get squirrels out of your loft immediately.
Squirrels do not spread any diseases that can be transmitted to humans which is positive news, the negative news is that squirrels are a frustrating destructive pest.
Rats and mice are often blamed for chewing through cables, wires, plaster and timber but quite often it is the grey squirrel that is the real offender. It is when squirrels chew through electrical wires that you are at risk of house fires.
Just like rats incisors squirrels teeth are constantly growing, they must gnaw hard items to wear them down to the optimum length and to keep them sharp. If they choose a piece of structural timber in your loft or attic to wear their teeth down, (often chomping right through 4” timber) you may end up with a very expensive repair bill or even worse a building with risk or the roof collapsing!!
