Why it is Essential to Have Pest Monitoring in Food Businesses

It is a requirement that all food businesses have pest monitoring in place. iQ Pest Control have numerous food business clients that have no current pest control issues, we also very much hope they will never have any pest issues. The only reason we are able to confirm that there are no pest issues is due to the insect and rodent monitoring services that we provide, and almost more importantly the record keeping.

For all our service agreement clients we record all pest control and pest monitoring results. This information can then be shared with the local Environmental Health Departments (EHO) on their regular scheduled and spot check inspections. If during one of our scheduled pest monitoring visits we discover that non toxic bait has been consumed in a rodent monitoring station or insects have been caught on a insect monitoring station we can act accordingly to prevent the infestation from causing serious issues.

The below photo was taken from an insect monitor at a takeaway/restaurant that we provide services for in Milton Keynes. Their kitchen and storeroom is always impeccably clean, we have never recorded any pest issues in the 2 years that we have been providing monthly monitoring. An insect and rodent monitoring inspection this week revealed cockroaches. The only insect monitors that had any activity were all located in the storeroom. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the cockroaches had “hitched at ride” in or on a large sack of rice, fortunately this rice was only delivered 2 days before our visit and had yet to be opened. The bag has now been disposed of and a treatment is underway. This is a classic example of why insect and rodent monitoring is absolutely essential for all food businesses.
